Ekweremadu's Wife reportedly back in Nigeria amid UK's plan to reduce prison population

Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria following her release from a UK prison.

Arise reports that Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday, and while further details were not immediately disclosed, a former Special Adviser to Ike Ekweremadu confirmed her release. Local media sources have since reported that she is currently back in her home state of Enugu.

In May 2023, Beatrice Ekweremadu from Willesden Green, London (DOB: 10/09/1966) was found guilty of conspiracy to arrange the travel of another person with a view to exploitation and sentenced to four years and six months at the Old Bailey

The controversial case, which also saw Senator Ekweremadu sentenced to ten years in prison, became a focal point for global discussions about human trafficking and unethical medical practices. Dr. Obinna Obeta, a medical doctor who was involved, also faced conviction and sentencing.

While Mrs Ekweremadu was initially sentenced to six years, her early release has raised questions. In the UK, prisoners typically serve 50% of their sentence before becoming eligible for release. However, it is understood that time spent on remand — reportedly since late June or early July 2022 — is subtracted from the total sentence, and this could account for part of her early release.

Also, the UK government disclosed its plan to tackle overcrowding in prisons with the aim of delivering 14,000 more prison places in England and Wales by 2031. In December 2024, the BBC reported that this plan involves building four new prisons, adding new blocks to existing prisons, opening temporary cells and releasing prisoners early.

Some prisoners have also been released early and a review of sentencing has been announced, as ministers try to ease pressure on prison places.

Since September 2024, more than 3,100 prisoners have been let out of jail under the government’s early release scheme in England and Wales. The new policy dictates that eligible prisoners serving more than five years can now be automatically released after only 40% of their fixed-term sentence, rather than the usual 50%.

In the case of Beatrice Ekweremadu, her incarceration from July 2022 till December 2024 accounts for 40% of the time she is due to serve.
