Ekiti shit: 60% of Nigerians who defecate openly are from this state – report
At least 60.8% of Nigerians who defecate in public places do so in Ekiti State, two international bodies say.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the European Union (EU) say two in three Ekiti residents engage in open defecation.
UNICEF and the EU made the finding public at a two-day media networking and alliance building workshop on Water Sanitation and Hygiene held at Ijero Ekiti last Friday and Saturday.
UNICEF’s Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Mohsena Islam, led the UNICEF/EU delegation.
He said over 2.5 billion people lacked access to improved sanitation globally, out of which one billion were engaging in open defecation.
He said of Ekiti state’s 2.7 million population, 1.8 million engage in open defecation. The details are contained in the report the two international agencies presented at the two-day workshop.
