Drug peddlers disguising as police officers nabbed with 50 bags of cannabis in Edo

Two suspected drug smugglers have been nabbed by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Etsako East LGA, Edo State.

The suspects, Matthew Onumba and Ojukwwu Henry, were said to have disguised in police uniforms while conveying 50 bags weighing about 685 kilogrammes of dried weeds, suspected to be cannabis sativa, along Okpella-Okene road.

They were intercepted in their black hilux van with an emblem sticker with the Nigeria Police Force, registered with Ondo AKR 392 LZ.

The NDLEA Commander in Edo, Buba Wakawa, said on Friday that the suspects were notoriously known for smuggling cannabis from the Southern part of the country to the North-West part of the country.

Wakawa added that during a raid in Okupje forest about 2,412kg of cannabis was found.

“The black bus (Toyota), with tainted glass, had a siren and police stickers both at the front and rear to deceive unsuspecting members of the public as well as security personnel. It has all the paraphernalia of an official police vehicle but all is a ruse,” he said.

“So much has been invested in this operation and I am glad that our efforts have been rewarded.”
