Drought: Farmer commits suicide 24 hours before it rained
The drought ravaging parts of South Africa has taken a farmer’s life, and in tragic circumstances.
A commercial cattle farmer in the Eastern Cape province, Krisjan Kruger, took his own life, Tuesday, when it seemed he was going to lose everything he had worked for to the drought.
And it rained on Wednesday.
“If only he had waited a bit, because a day later it rained,” his friend, Jacques Roodt told News24.
“We spoke on Monday evening and he was just in a bad space, but I thought he was fine because he motivated me a lot and told me that we will eventually receive rain,” Roodt said.
Kruger, 34, leaves behind his mother.
The drought has led to huge water crisis with the Joe Gqabi district municipality having already declared a drought disaster.
Water and animal feed remain scarce in the area with a Facebook page, Boere in Nood, already set up to mobilize help for farmers.
