Democrats trade blame after presidential race thump, Biden takes major bullets
The incumbent president of the United States of America, Joe Biden has come under fire for the loss of Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris’ loss to Donald Trump in the last concluded election.
Kamala Harris pulled 226 electoral votes, while the Republican candidate, Trump scored 295
Recall that Trump had earlier stated his victory before the official announcement after he recorded wins in two swing states with a fine margin.
Biden, 81 had doubters within the Democratic Party when he was gunning for re-election in April 2023 due to his overly advanced age, but his victory over Trump in the 2021 polls kept the democrats positive that he can “finish the job”.
His disastrous debate in June was the last straw. He was constantly fumbling his words and had a weak voice.
According to Biden, he admitted he “screwed up“, but blamed his poor outing on exhaustion and cold.
With pressure mounting on him from his party to step down, he succumbed and endorsed his VP, Harris a little over three months to the presidential election.
Trying to come to terms over how they won the 2020 election and lost to the same opponent, various Democrats have erred their views.
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran for president as a Democrat in 2016 and 2020, blasted the party itself in a lengthy statement that accused it of abandoning working people.
“While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change, and they’re right”, he wrote.
In Biden’s defence, Democratic National Committee Chairman, Jaime Harrison on his Official X handle termed the accusation as “straight up BS”, saying Biden was “the most-pro worker President of my life time”.
Some said Harris was a weak candidate who struggled with media appearances, while others cited over-reliance on celebrity involvement over policy substance during campaign as a factor.
One-time Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and others have suggested Harris erred in picking Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, an older progressive, as her running mate instead of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a more youthful, Jewish-American moderate.
Biden had evidently lost the votes of the American people even before the debates, as his approval rating had dropped after the US military’s Afghan evacuation in August, 2021.
Inspite of the blame game ravaging the Democratic Party, Biden has been identified as the male culprit.
Recall that Trump in his rallies singled Biden as directly responsible for inflation spiking to a 40-year high in June 2022.
Harris, trying to do damage control during her rallies pointed reminded the citizens of the steep recession when Trump was in office and cited how the current government has made significant improvements in inflation, the swing state voters remained adamant on re-election the Democratic candidate. They said the economy was very much better during Trump’s first tenure.
