Delta reveals how it plans to respond to COVID-19

With Italy overtaking China as the country with the highest number of deaths from coronavirus, countries across the world are not losing sleep in their efforts to limit the spread of the virus in their locality and also reduce fatality from confirmed cases.

Nigeria has recorded 12 confirmed cases so far and as part of measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, the Nigerian government, on Friday, announced that it is shutting three international airports – the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano; Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and Port-Harcourt International Airport, in Rivers State, effective from midnight on Saturday 21st March, 2020. The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos will remain open to and accept all International flights.

To complement the effort of the federal government, states in Nigeria are also putting local measures in place to prepare for eventualities and limit spread of the virus. The Delta State government said it is setting up 11 holding facilities across the state.

Delta state is one of the states without any confirmed case of COVID-19, but in a statement on the government’s official Twitter handle, the state said: “Citizens and residents of Delta State should note that as a precautionary measure to mitigate against the potential spread of the Corona Virus, the Delta State government has set up 11 holding facilities across the state.”

These centers, which the state said have been set up in accordance with NCDC guidelines, are located in healthcare facilities across the state.
