Delta gov suspends the school head of child sent home for fees after viral video

Mrs Vero Igbigwe, the head teacher of Okotie-Eboh Primary School in Sapele, who sent a young schoolgirl, Success Adebor home for owing school fees has been suspended by the government of Delta state after a video where the girl expressed frustration over the issue went viral.

Delta state government revealed that it offers free education to all public school children in the state, and by allegedly collecting unauthorized fees and levies from pupils, Mrs Igbigwe is being suspended for contravening the law.

The little girl who sparked the controversy was filmed by an unknown individual as she protested about being sent home because of her parents’s inability to pay her second term school fees. She preferred to be beaten and allowed to remain in school until she can pay the fee which was said to be N5,000.

The Commissioner of Education in the state, Mr Chiedu Ebie, disclosed on Monday that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was displeased by the action of the head teacher. He stated that the administration will not condone any form of extortion by state officials, especially when it involves the education of Delta children which is free of charge.

Based on the Commissioner’s verification of the viral video, he noted that Mrs Igbigwe has been placed under suspension while proper investigation is carried out to reach a final conclusion on the matter.
