Cyril Ramaphosa effectively takes over as South Africa’s president after Jacob Zuma exit
February 15, 2018
Cyril Ramaphosa has, on Thursday (today), effectively taken over as President of South Africa after Jacob Zuma resigned his position late Wednesday.
The ruling Africa National Congress (ANC) confirmed Ramaphosa’s new office today. He was unopposed.
He was elected without a vote after being the only candidate nominated in the parliament in Cape Town, chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng told assembled lawmakers.
Ramaphosa, 66, was a onetime chief negotiator for Nelson Mandela and has been the deputy president of South Africa since 2014. He will now serve as the country’s 5th president.
Jacob Zuma had resigned after a 9 year rule plagued with allegations of corruption.
