COVID-19 patient delivered of baby at Lagos University Teaching Hospital
The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) says a team of doctors, anaesthetists and nurses delivered a 40-year-old COVID-19 patient of a baby girl on Monday.
The health facility revealed this in a Twitter statement on Monday afternoon and added that the mother and child are well and alive.
“A team of LUTH Drs, anaesthetists and nurses delivered a woman with Covid-19 of a baby girl this afternoon 40 year old mother and 3.3kg baby are doing fine,” LUTH tweeted.
“Our gratitude go to these gallant men and women and all warriors making d nation proud in d face of this scourge.”
This is coming barely a week after a pregnant woman died of Coronavirus after she was delivered of a baby. The state government said the baby is alive.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there is no evidence that pregnant women infected with coronavirus are at higher risk of severe illness than other patients who test positive.
“However, due to changes in their bodies and immune systems, we know that pregnant women can be badly affected by some respiratory infections. It is therefore important that they take precautions to protect themselves against COVID-19, and report possible symptoms (including fever, cough or difficulty breathing) to their healthcare provider,” WHO said.
Clarifying whether the deadly virus can be passed from an infected mother to her fetus, WHO said “we still do not know if a pregnant woman with COVID-19 can pass the virus to her foetus or baby during pregnancy or delivery. To date, the virus has not been found in samples of amniotic fluid or breastmilk.”
