Court convicts ‘Yahoo boy’ for scamming foreigners by parading as US Army officer
An internet fraudster, Peter James has been convicted by the court for defrauding his victims through an instant messaging application.
James, according to the EFCC, was discovered to have been parading himself on QQ International as ‘Barnett Edward’, a United States Army who got injured in Afghanistan.
The commission said he was using the identity to attract sympathy from would-be victims, who were mostly foreigners.
Electronic devices recovered from James, which were subjected to forensic analysis revealed incriminating documents, linked him to online fraud.
He was arraigned on a one-count charge of “impersonation and attempt to cheat” before a FCT High Court, Gudu, on Thursday.
He pleaded “guilty” to the charge.
James was subsequently convicted by Justice Adebiyi, who then adjourned proceedings to January 31, for sentencing.
