Cardoso Urges Nigerian Youths: ‘Stay and Build Nigeria, Don’t Japa’

CBN to float non-resident BVN platform for diasporan Nigerians December - Cardoso

In a heartfelt plea to Nigerian youths, Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), urged the country’s younger generation not to emigrate, reassuring them that the ongoing reforms are designed to secure a prosperous future for all Nigerians. Cardoso made the remarks during his keynote address at the 59th annual Bankers Dinner hosted by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos.

While acknowledging the harsh realities Nigerians are facing due to the current reforms, Cardoso emphasized that these measures are essential for tackling present challenges and unlocking the opportunities of tomorrow. He reassured the audience that every decision made at the CBN is rooted in the best interests of the people, with the ultimate goal of fostering economic growth and prosperity.

“I want to assure you that at the Central Bank, every decision we make is for serving the best interest of the people,” Cardoso said. “We are committed to strengthening our internal capacity and ensuring that all our actions are based on solid, evidence-driven analysis.”

In his address, Cardoso strongly advised youths against leaving the country in search of opportunities elsewhere, highlighting that Nigeria’s economic future holds vast potential. He cautioned against the risks of selling off assets cheaply in the face of uncertainty, as foreign investors—whom he noted are showing significant interest in Nigeria—may seize such opportunities for profit.

“It is not a good idea to ‘japa’ at this stage,” Cardoso warned. “If you leave now, you may end up selling your assets at a loss to outsiders who are waiting to capitalize on the situation. Instead, I urge you to stay and be part of the solution.”

Cardoso spoke optimistically about the growing interest from international investors, underscoring that Nigeria offers opportunities that should not be overlooked. He encouraged Nigerian youths to take an active role in shaping the country’s future, stressing that it is a time for collective effort.

“There are significant opportunities today in the Nigerian market,” Cardoso said. “From my experience over the past year, I can tell you that there is increasing interest from foreign players in Nigerian assets. We, who are here, should seize these opportunities and be part of the solution for the better future that awaits us.”

The CBN Governor also recognized the tough reality many Nigerians are facing due to the reforms, but reiterated that these changes are necessary to create a more resilient and thriving economy for the future. He emphasized that the vision of building an economy where everyone—individuals, businesses, and communities—can prosper will require a unified effort from all stakeholders.

“We are building an economy where every individual, every business, and every community can thrive,” Cardoso said. “But this vision cannot be achieved by one institution alone. It requires all of us—banks, regulators, businesses, and citizens—to work together with steadfast resolve.”
