Car snatcher nabbed in Ogun, one killed

Two suspected car snatchers were on Wednesday arrested by the police in Ogun State.

One of the suspects, Taiwo Raheem, said his gang were always going around with a keg full of petrol to avoid fuel shortage after they snatch any car.

Raheem and other five members of the gang were said to have invaded Oke-Odo community in Soyoye area of the ancient town of Abeokuta to perpetuate the crime.

One of the members, Taoreed Adegbite, said to be a resident of the community, died from injuries he sustained after a mob descended on them.

“Whoever fails to plan, plans to fail. That is the essence of our going on operation with at least 10 liters of petrol,” Raheem is quoted as saying.

“When we got to the area, with the late Adegbite as the leader and pointer, he fired a shot into the apartment through the window, a dangerous trend that sent shivers down the spines of the occupants and forced the owner of the car to throw the key to us, also through the window.”

The 42-year-old said the gang members went into the car and started the ignition, only to realize from the fuel guage that the fuel in it would not take them far and, as such, they filled the tank with the petrol they went with before escaping with it.

The suspects had reportedly abandoned the car on a street and joined Muslim faithfuls in the community in the early morning prayer, only to return to the car and ran into a mob who sighted guns on the back seat of the car.

Raheem and Adegbite were apprehended while the remaining four escaped. Police on the trail of the suspects arrived to take them away.
