The atmosphere inside Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) in Lagos degenerated into chaos after a female final year student died due to what is being described as “medical neglect.”

Oluwabukola Charity Dazan, 27, finished writing a practical examination (Advanced Web Page Design) around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday when she fell ill, several students told NewsroomNG.

She went to the medical center to be attended to but she was referred to Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Ebute-Metta. There, medics refused attending to her until a N35,000 fee was paid.

By the time students could raise the money, Dazan was dead. She died around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Her corpse was taken back to YabaTech around that time.

She had defecated on herself. Nurses didn’t wash her up. They didn’t remove her from the school’s medical bus.

They left her in her mess. By 8:00 a.m. she was stinking and swollen. There were flies all over her in the bus. A female student spotted it and raised the alarm. Clinic security officials reportedly threw the alarmed student out of the medical center.

Angry students returned to the school after her burial to vandalise the medical center. Our reporter saw them set fire to the facility. Security officials were able to put out the fire before it did damage.

The students made no attempt to flee the scene despite the presence of school security officials.

Some students later baricaded the Jibowu end of the Herbert Macaulay Road, Yaba. They made bonfires from car tires and sang solidarity songs.

As at 7:30 p.m., the road was still barricaded..
