Traders in Anambra were left to count their losses as fire engulfed Nnewi Timber Market in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.

By the time the fire was quenched, goods and machines worth millions of Naira had been destroyed, NAN reports.

No fewer than five traders reportedly collapsed and were rushed to hospitals due to shock of losing their goods in the inferno.

The Chairman of the Nnewi Timber Dealers Association, Chief Chukwunonso Nnetu said the fire started few minutes past midnight and men from the Fire Service arrived a little too late.

“The Nnewi Fire Service men later arrived though the fire had reached an advanced stage,” Nnetu said.

“We lost about 155 shops, 555 sawing and curving machines valued at N2m each were destroyed; different categories and quantities of woods and planks were also destroyed.

“We don’t know the exact cause of the fire, but we have lost well over N3bn to the inferno.”

The traders now wonder how they would recover from the loss at a time of recession. Their only means of survival have been reduced to ashes, Nnetu said.

Mr. Jude Ugwu, the Secretary to the market association, who noted that the fire affected most processing machines, appealed to the state government to rise to the traders’ aid.

The traders had a reason to be thankful however, as no life was lost to the incident.

A Director in the state Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Chukwudi Onyejekwe said the agency would “assist the traders by pleading with the state and federal governments to come to their rescue through the National Emergency Management Agency.”
