Anambra sets date for LG Elections

Anambra state has decided on Saturday, 28th September 2024 as the date for its forthcoming local government elections.

The news was announced by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) on Monday.

In a statement signed by the ANSIEC chairman, Genevieve Osakwe, in Awka, the polls will be the first witnessed in the state 10yrs ago in 2014.

According to the ANSIEC, information such as, activities schedule, election timetable, and other details can be obtained from the Commission’s headquarters in Awka from Wednesday, 14th August 2024.

“The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered political parties and the general public that local government elections in the state will be held on Saturday, 28th September 2024.

“The election timetable, schedule of activities, and other details can be collected from the headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, 14th August 2024,” the circular stated.

Since 2014, all 21 local government areas have been under the administration of caretaker committee chairmen appointed by successive governors after every 3 months.

The elections spell an end to caretaker committee chairmen appointed by the Governor.

Understandably, expectations are high as natives anticipate the voting of their own Local Government Chairmen even in the wake of autonomy being granted to LGs across the federation by the Supreme Court.
