Agriculture provides alternative way out of bad economy as Lagosians consume N3b worth of foodstuff daily

Lagosians are consuming as much as N3b worth of food items daily and in the current economic crisis, it portends bright financial prospects for investors willing to test their hands on agriculture.

In fact, the Lagos State government has started laying a solid foundation for agriculture to be another source of revenue for the almost-independent state.

Many unemployed Nigerian youths can explore the opportunities of an economy that hasn’t fully tapped into the agricultural sector’s prospects, with the government’s heavy reliance on oil already having devastating effects.

“The investment climate in Lagos State is very bright and investors are guaranteed a profitable return as the State is the largest consumer of food commodities in the country,” Akinwunmi Ambode, the state governor said during his speech at the maiden edition of the Lagos Food Security and Exhibition Summit on Thursday, November 10.

“Our population of over 22 million people, our State consumes over N3billion worth of food items daily and this represents a lot of opportunities for entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.”

According to Ambode, in a bid to encourage investments in the agricultural sector, Lagos State has acquired lands in neighbouring States such as Ogun and Oyo, as well as Abuja.

Its partnership with Kebbi State Government for the development of agricultural commodities such as rice, wheat, groundnut, onion, maize and beef value chain is expected to yield an impressive supply of 70% of the total national rice consumption.

With the chances of securing white collar jobs in the country looking increasingly bleak, many unemployed youths can tap into this opportunity and secure a financially rewarding future for themselves.
