Abia polls: ZLP cruises to victory, wins 15 from 17 LGAs

The Abia LG election scheduled for 2 November has been deemed a success, after the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. George Chima stated that the exercise which normally takes six to twelve months, was conducted within the span of two months and was entirely peaceful on the basis of it being free and fair.

The results announced at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital, on Saturday stated that Zenith Labour Party emerged victorious in 15 out of the 17 Local Government Areas, while the Young Progressive Party won the remaining two LGAs.

Chima when addressing newsmen said “We have fulfilled the duty we were inaugurated on September 5 to carry out.

“It wasn’t an easy task, but we went above and beyond to raise awareness about the election across the state”

“We have been able to complete a task that could typically take six to twelve months within a span of two months”.

According to him, the commission for the very first time was conducting a poll with over 12 political parties involved, he said, “In recent times, this commission has not conducted an election with over 12 political parties participating. This, in itself, is a milestone for the commission.”

While congratulating the winner and encouraging those who lost out, he expressed joy as the political parties contesting and security agencies “played by the rules” which made the poll violent free

“In any election, there are winners and losers, but the most important thing is that Abia remains peaceful. I urge everyone to uphold this peace”, he reiterated.
