85-year old Paul Biya wins 7th term as Cameroon’s president
October 22, 2018
After 36 years as the president of Cameroon, Paul Biya has won an unprecedented 7th term in office. The 85-year-old was announced moments ago as the winner of the highly contentious election with 71% of the votes.
Observers say the prevailing insecurity in many parts of the country prevented more than half of the voting populace from doing so.
Only President Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea has spent more time in office (39 years) on the continent at the moment. However, after 94-year-old Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe resigned from office in 2017, Paul Biya became Africa’s oldest leader (85).
