8,000 prospects fight for chance to secure partner as Kano arranges mass wedding

The Kano state Hisbah Board has revealed that no fewer than 8,000 prospective couples have shown interest in securing a partner in the ongoing screening for mass wedding organized by the state government.

Kano state had announced in December 2018 that it will be arranging mass wedding for widows, divorcees and spinsters in the state.

Professors and prominent individuals who wished to have more wives were given an open proposal to come forward and pick registration forms that will enable them to choose from a pool of women that will be selected for the program.

A 23-member committee was set by the state government under the purview of the Kano State Hisbah Board to oversee the entire process of finding 3,000 husbands and organizing mass wedding ceremony for widows, divorces and spinters in the state

The spokesperson of the board, Alhaji Adamu Yahaya has disclosed that more than 8,000 prospective couples have joined the program so far, and each of them are taken through a mandatory health screening exercise.

Among those who have undergone the screening process, Yahaya said 15 of them were HIV positive and about 23 women were found to be pregnant.

He further stated that the screening is still ongoing and prospective couples from the 44 local government areas of Kano were being considered.

The mass wedding is expected to hold once the screening is completed.
