3 injured as runaway cow dies in car crash
At least three people landed in hospital after a cow apparently escaped from a farm and wandered into a highway in California.
The cow was hit by a speeding vehicle as it tried to cross the road. It died on the spot.
The initial crash caused a chain reaction resulting in a second collision that ended in a five-car pileup, UPI reported.
California Highway Patrol received calls about a pair of collisions on eastbound state Highway 4 at 7:59pm on Monday, including one in which a vehicle fatally struck a cow that was crossing the highway.
Three people were transported to a hospital after sustaining minor injuries in the second collision.
Highway patrol were unsure where the cow came from, but local rancher Nick Compaglia speculated that poor weather in the area may have contributed to its escape.
“Maybe because of this terrible winter…erosion underneath the fence, the hill slid and the cow got out that way…It scares us all to death when they get out on the freeway,” he said.
