29 Dead in Kebbi Flood, Farmlands Destroyed
Neusroom gather that flood has claimed 29 lives and destroyed 321,000 houses and 858,000 farmlands across 16 out of 21 local government areas in Kebbi state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Yakubu Ahmed, informed newsmen of the development on Firday in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi.
Fears of food crisis heightens as rice, maize, and guinea corn farmlands have all been destroyed in the flood.
“If help did not come to the affected areas where rice, maize, guinea corn, and other crops were destroyed by the flood, there might be a shortage of food in the state and Nigeria at large,” he said.
Recall that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) had, earlier, warned that Kebbi state will be one of the main states to be hit by floodings.

Ahmed lamented that water from Goronyo dam and the convergence of waters from River Rima and River Kaa through River Niger had caused prior flooding before the predictions.
“Only 5 out of the 16 local governments of the state are minimally affected. The flood had destroyed farmlands, bridges, and thousands of households,” Ahmed said.
He disclosed that seven persons died in Shanga; eight in Maiyama; five in Kalgo; seven in Jega, and two in Birnin Kebbi.
The Commissioner stated that the state government alone could not handle this crisis and were in need of urgent help from the federal government, top corporations and well-meaning Nigerians.
