17 die, more feared trapped under pile of refuse in Mozambique
At least 17 persons have fallen victims to a tragic incident in Mozambique, having been buried alive under huge pile of refuse on Monday.
According to reports, the huge pile of garbage had fallen on top of at least seven houses after a torrential rainfall made it lose its balance.
The community was situated right beside a landfill site in the Hulene neighbourhood in the outskirts of the country’s capital Maputo. The pile of waste was said to be as high as a three-story building.

According to reports, authorities had previously warned residents of the dangers of living in the area, and had also asked them to leave.
Combing and evacuation of victims from the area continue, as authorities fear more bodies are trapped under the huge pile of waste.
A representative of a district, Despedida Rita said: “Up to now 17 dead bodies were recovered. We fear more might be unaccounted for.”
“We will keep searching for bodies buried underneath the garbage pile.”
