Zamfara LG workers earn N6,000 salary as NLC demand N30,000 minimum wage

Recent statement made by Ibrahim Khaleel, the National President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has revealed that Local Government workers in Zamfara state are the worst paid in Nigeria.

Speaking in preparation for the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the union in Abuja, Mr Khaleel disclosed that Zamfara only pays its LG workers a meagre sum of N6,000; less than $20 a month.

What this implies is that LG workers in the state are among those categorized as living in abject poverty with less than a dollar per day in Nigeria.

The workers have always expressed dissatisfaction on the amount of money they receive as salary at the end of the month.

Khaleel inferred that poor earnings among Zamfara residents has been one of the leading causes of rising insecurity in the state. He blamed the Governor, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari for not keeping faith with the people and for kicking against the newly proposed minimum wage of N30,000.

Although the Federal Government had previously set minimum wage at N18,000, which the Labour Congress, NLC is fighting to increase to N30,000, it is unfortunate that some states are not even implementing the N18,000 salary.

The whole issue was blamed on lack of autonomy at the Local Government level as Mr Khaleel concluded that the welfare of the workers will only improve if the LGs are allowed to function optimally.
