Why the UK Plans to Impose Tougher Visa Rules on Nigeria
The United Kingdom is set to impose tougher visa restrictions on Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, citing concerns over high rates of visa overstays and asylum applications from nationals of these countries.
First reported by The Times, the UK Home Office said it is concerned that many foreign nationals who arrive on student or work visas later seek asylum as a means to remain in the country permanently. This trend has prompted the government to review visa eligibility for citizens from high-risk countries.
“Our upcoming Immigration White Paper will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system,” a Home Office spokesperson said.
“To tackle abuse by foreign nationals who arrive on work and study visas and go on to claim asylum, we are building intelligence on the profile of these individuals to identify them earlier and faster,” the spokesperson added.
As part of this strategy, the UK government says it will not hesitate to take action when visa trends “undermine our immigration rules.”
The new restrictions may include tighter scrutiny of visa applications from these countries, particularly for those seeking to study or work in the UK.
“We keep the visa system under constant review,” the Home Office noted. “Where we detect trends that may undermine our immigration rules, we will not hesitate to take action.”
