Why Emiliano Martinez Was Banned by FIFA for “Offensive Behavior”
FIFA has handed a two-match ban to Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for what it describes as “offensive behavior.” The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced the suspension on Saturday, September 28, sparking discussions among fans and pundits alike.

The 32-year-old Aston Villa goalkeeper was found guilty of “violating principles of fair play” during two separate incidents. The first offense occurred after Argentina’s World Cup qualifier victory over Chile on September 5, where Martinez was seen holding a replica of the Copa America trophy to his groin. This gesture drew criticism, particularly since Martinez had previously displayed similar behavior with the Golden Glove trophy following Argentina’s triumphant penalty shootout win against France in the 2022 World Cup final.

In addition to this incident, FIFA sanctioned Martinez for an altercation where he struck a TV cameraman’s camera with his gloves after Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Colombia on September 10. These actions, deemed inappropriate, led to FIFA’s disciplinary committee taking action against the goalkeeper.

The AFA (Argentine Football Association) expressed its strong discontent with the ruling, stating,

“It should be noted that the Argentine Football Association expresses its absolute disagreement with the decision taken by the FIFA disciplinary committee.”

As a result of this suspension, Martinez will miss crucial World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on October 10 and Bolivia on October 15. Argentina currently leads the South American qualifying table with 18 points after eight matches, closely pursued by Colombia, just two points behind.
