“We owe Lagosians a duty” -Lagos Assembly cites reasons for impeaching Obasa as Speaker
The Lagos State House of Assembly has explained why its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, was impeached.
Hon. Abiodun Tobun told newsmen, on Monday, that the ouster of Obasa was done in order to protect the “reputation of this Assembly.”
“Change is inevitable. The members of this House, in exercising our constitutional right to regulate our proceedings, unanimously decided that we had endured enough under the leadership of the Right Honourable Speaker.”
“Today, we have resolved to replace him to safeguard the sanctity and reputation of this Assembly,” Tobun said.
In Obasa’s stead, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was installed as the new Speaker, while Hon. Mojeed Fatai Adebola was nominated as Deputy Speaker of the House.
Furthermore, all principal positions and standing committees were dissolved.
“This action was not taken lightly. We owe Lagosians a duty to ensure that this House remains a beacon of integrity and progress. By removing the former Speaker, we have demonstrated our commitment to our constituents and the state at large,” Tobun continued.
The development gets even more interesting as the Speaker was away in the United States when his impeachment was executed.
News of his impeachment is reported to have been greeted by cheers from staff of the Assembly.
