“We never demanded police report before treating youth corps member” – Garki hospital

The Garki Hospital, Abuja has dispelled reports that its doctors refused to treat Miss Angela Igwetu, the youth corps member who was allegedly shot dead by a policeman at the early hours of Wednesday.

There had been alleged reports that Iwetu was denied treatment and was allowed to bleed to death by the doctors at the hospital, despite police presence.

Newsroom had reported that the doctors may have breached the law and violated the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims Of Gunshot Act, 2017.

The hospital’s management said in a statement signed by its Medical Director, Dr. Nyomudim Essen Thursday afternoon that the allegation was false. It stated that the hospital does not demand for police report, nor money, before attending to trauma patients.

“Miss Igwetu was brought to our hospital at about 3:05am on 4th July 2018 in a very precarious condition,” the statement read.

“The doctors on duty at the Accident and Emergency including the consultant surgeon on call battled to save her life by providing care including blood transfusions and limited surgery.

“This was done even before any form of payment could be made. Unfortunately, despite all efforts to save her life, she did not make it,” it added.

Though it was stated in the report that the claim was only an allegation, we deeply apologise for the embarrassment and smeared reputation the report may have caused the Garki Hospital’s management.
