U.S Accuses Iran of Plotting Assassination of Donald Trump

The U.S. Justice Department has formally accused Iran of plotting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, heightening tensions between the two nations. The revelation came as the FBI uncovered details of a disturbing conspiracy to target the future U.S. president, fueled by directives from Tehran.

“This investigation exposes Iran’s ongoing and brazen attempts to harm U.S. citizens, including President-elect Trump,” FBI Director Christopher Wray stated, underscoring the gravity of the threat. The investigation began following the interrogation of a 51-year-old man with dual Iranian and Afghan citizenship. The individual confessed that just weeks before the 2020 U.S. presidential election, he was instructed by Iranian officials to devise and execute a plan to assassinate Trump. Authorities consider these statements to be credible.

The plot was first brought to light when Trump’s campaign team alerted the U.S. Secret Service about a series of specific and concrete threats from Iran. The case has since snowballed into a broader investigation into Iranian efforts to target both U.S. citizens and political figures.

In response, the Justice Department has filed charges against the 51-year-old man and two other accomplices, who are also implicated in a separate conspiracy to kill an Iranian dissident. Arrest warrants have been issued for all three men, although their whereabouts remain unknown.

Attorney General Merrick Garland

Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a stern warning, emphasizing the gravity of the situation: “Few state actors present as dire a threat to U.S. national security as the Iranian regime.” He made it clear that the U.S. would not tolerate Iran’s aggressive actions that endanger American lives and undermine national security.

The chilling news comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. During his first term, Trump took a hardline stance against Iran, withdrawing from the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement, imposing harsh sanctions, and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Trump’s confrontational policy reached a peak in January 2020 when a U.S. drone strike ordered by the president killed General Qassem Soleimani, the powerful leader of Iran’s Quds Force, in Baghdad.
