Trump Names Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary
President-elect Donald Trump has selected Scott Bessent, a prominent hedge fund manager and founder of Key Square Capital Management, to serve as the next Treasury Secretary. The announcement comes amid a series of key cabinet picks and follows the unexpected withdrawal of Trump’s attorney general nominee, Matt Gaetz.

At 62, Bessent brings a wealth of financial expertise to the table, having built a successful career on Wall Street and gained international recognition for his strategic investments. With an eye on fulfilling his promises to reshape U.S. economic policy, Trump has entrusted Bessent with the responsibility of executing plans that include substantial tax cuts and the imposition of tariffs aimed at protecting American interests.

“Scott is widely respected as one of the world’s foremost international investors and geopolitical and economic strategists,” Trump said in a statement on Friday evening. “He will help me usher in a new Golden Age for the United States, fortifying our position as the world’s leading economy.”
As Treasury Secretary, Bessent will oversee a wide range of critical issues, including tax policy, public debt, international finance, and sanctions. The Treasury Department plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s financial future, making this appointment one of the most eagerly awaited by the business and finance communities. Trump’s ongoing plans to revamp global trade and possibly expand tax cuts from his first term will place Bessent at the center of the economic decision-making process.
A longtime supporter of Trump, Bessent was an early financial backer of his 2024 presidential campaign, contributing at least $3 million, according to Federal Election Commission records. Known for his support of deregulation, reducing government subsidies, and increasing domestic energy production, Bessent has also been a staunch defender of using tariffs for economic growth.
Trump’s cabinet announcements have come in quick succession, following Gaetz’s withdrawal from the attorney general nomination due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Other notable picks include Russell Vought, who will return to lead the Office of Management and Budget, and Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer, selected as labor secretary. Trump also nominated Scott Turner, a former football player and ex-administration official, to serve as housing secretary, and Wall Street veteran Howard Lutnick as commerce secretary.
In health-related appointments, Dr. Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins University surgeon known for opposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates, is set to lead the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a Fox News contributor, will become the next Surgeon General, and former Congressman Dave Weldon will head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
