Tragedy on the Niger: At Least 44 Soldiers Killed in Brutal Jihadist Ambush

A deadly ambush by suspected jihadist militants has claimed the lives of at least 44 officers from Niger Republic’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS), marking one of the bloodiest attacks on the nation’s military in recent months.

The brutal assault occurred on Monday during a river patrol operation in the Falmey area of the Dosso Region, near Niger’s border with Benin Republic. The news broke late Tuesday through Zagazola Makama, a leading counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region.

Citing intelligence sources, Zagazola Makama reported that the patrol unit — comprising 71 soldiers — was ambushed by militants believed to be affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked extremist group active in the Sahel.

Among the confirmed fatalities was the unit commander, with several bodies still unaccounted for and presumed lost in the River Niger. The attack, described as well-coordinated and ferocious, has sent shockwaves through the region.

So far, 27 soldiers have been rescued, many of them wounded and currently receiving medical treatment. A large-scale search-and-recovery operation is underway, as authorities race to find missing personnel and secure the area.

In response to the tragedy, security has been intensified across Dosso and neighbouring regions. While the Nigerien government has yet to release an official statement, sources suggest high-level security consultations are ongoing in the capital, Niamey.
