Tobi Amusan wins Silver at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo
Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan added another accolade to her glittering career after winning silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday.
The 28-year-old, who holds the world record in the event, clocked 12.29 seconds in a thrilling final but was narrowly beaten by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji. Kambundji stormed to victory in 12.24 seconds, setting a new national record, while Grace Stark of the United States secured bronze in 12.34 seconds. Masai Russell of the U.S. finished just outside the medals in 12.44 seconds.
Amusan, the 2022 world champion in Oregon, was aiming to reclaim her crown and become a two-time world titleholder. Although she fell short of gold, her silver medal further cements her status as one of the sport’s greatest hurdlers. Her résumé already includes the world record of 12.12s, multiple Diamond League titles, and Commonwealth Games glory.
This latest podium finish is particularly significant for Amusan, who endured a disappointing outing at the Paris Olympics, where she failed to reach the finals. Her Tokyo performance is a strong statement that she remains among the world’s elite in the hurdles.
Nigeria’s medal hopes in Tokyo are still alive through Ezekiel Nathaniel, who advanced to the men’s 400m hurdles semifinals. The 21-year-old clocked 48.37 seconds in his heat, displaying impressive composure and strength in the closing stages. Nathaniel will be eyeing a spot in the final when he competes again on Wednesday.
