Tinubu Cancels Lagos Events to Honour Stampede Victims in Abuja, Anambra
President Bola Tinubu has called off all official engagements in Lagos today as a mark of respect for the victims of tragic stampedes that claimed lives in Abuja and Anambra State.
The first incident occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, where ten people, including children, lost their lives. Meanwhile, in Okija, Anambra State, an unconfirmed number of residents perished during a rice distribution event on Saturday morning.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, it was revealed that Tinubu had been scheduled to attend the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta. The event, organised by the Lagos State government, included a boat parade and other festivities, which the president planned to observe from his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi.

However, President Tinubu cancelled his appearance after receiving briefings on the tragedies. The statement noted that dignitaries, including senior Lagos State officials and traditional white cap chiefs, were already seated when the announcement was made.
The president expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families and called on state governments and relevant authorities to enforce stringent crowd control measures. Highlighting the similarity to a recent incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, Tinubu stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent such avoidable disasters.
“It is deeply disturbing that these incidents continue to occur. Local and state authorities must no longer tolerate operational lapses by organisations and corporate entities involved in charitable and humanitarian activities,” Tinubu stated.
The president offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. “In a season of joy and celebration, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones. Our prayers of divine comfort and healing are with them,” he said.
President Tinubu also reiterated the importance of adhering to safety protocols during public events. “These tragedies are preventable if organisers implement the necessary safeguards before, during, and after their activities,” he emphasised.
