6 things to Know About INEC’S New Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan

Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Here are 6 things to know about him:
- He was born on April 25, 1967, Amupitan and he hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
- He began his career at the University of Jos in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer and rose through the ranks to become a Reader in 2003 and a Professor in 2008. In 2014, he was conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession.
- Amupitan specialises in Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, Corporate Law and Privatisation Law. He obtained his LL.B from the University of Jos in 1987 and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Lagos, where he was called to the Bar in 1988.
- After his National Youth Service at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation, he joined the University of Jos, marking the beginning of a career spanning over 35 years in academia.
- He earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the same university in 1993 and later completed his Ph.D in Law there in 2007.
- He is one of the few individuals from Nigeria’s North-Central region to lead the electoral body.
His appointment places him at the helm of Nigeria’s electoral system at a critical time, with expectations that his decades of legal scholarship and institutional experience will shape electoral reforms and administration in the country.
