Tax Reform Bills Head to Tinubu as N’Assembly Completes Legislative Process

The National Assembly has transmitted a package of four tax reform bills to President Bola Tinubu for assent, marking a major milestone in the administration’s effort to modernise Nigeria’s tax system.

Yemi Adaramodu, chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, announced the development on Tuesday during a press briefing at the National Assembly Complex.

“Yes, the bill has now been transmitted. It is out of our hands and on its way to the executive,” Adaramodu said.

The legislative package includes the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, and the Nigeria Tax Bill. The bills aim to broaden the tax base, modernise tax administration, and improve coordination among federal, state, and local governments.

Originally submitted by Tinubu in November 2024 as part of his Renewed Hope economic agenda, the harmonised versions of the bills were adopted by both chambers on May 25.

“Tax bills like these require careful scrutiny. Legal departments in both chambers must ensure they align with existing laws before we send them to the presidency,” Adaramodu said. “It’s not a matter of two or three days. After harmonisation, the clerk of the national assembly prepares the final document. Only then can the senate president and the speaker sign off for transmission.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio last week commended lawmakers for prioritising national interest during the legislative process.

“These bills will add immense value to governance and transform how taxes are collected and shared in Nigeria,” Akpabio said.
