Suspected cultists shoot 16-year-old NDU student dead in Bayelsa
Miss Seiyefa Fred had reportedly stepped out to buy ‘suya’ for her mother when she was accosted by hoodlums who wanted to snatch her phone.
She was shot dead in the ensuing scuffle, police have confirmed.
The sad incident, reports say, occurred around Amarata area of Yenagoa Local Government, Bayelsa, around 8pm on Thursday.
Seiyefa’s assailants successfully made away with the phone, leaving the 100 level Bayelsa state Niger Delta University (NDU) student in a pool of her blood.
An eyewitness said sympathisers’ efforts to ensure the 16-year-old survived the attack was unsuccessful as she died at the hospital after losing much blood.
Bayelsa police spokesperson, DSP Asinim Butswat, said the assailants were suspected cultists.
“The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead,” Butswat said.
The police spokesman said the unit was collaborating with some residents in the community to identify the culprits, and to also find lasting solution to the issue of cultism within the state.
