South Korea’s Former First Lady Faces Bribery and Power Abuse Allegations

South Korea’s special prosecution has formally accused former First Lady Kim Keon-hee, wife of ex-President Yoon Suk-yeol, of abusing her position to interfere in state affairs in exchange for money and luxury gifts.

Speaking on Monday, special prosecutor Min Jung-ki said Kim leveraged her status as the president’s spouse to accept cash and high-value items while exerting influence over government appointments and nominations. His remarks followed the conclusion of a yearlong investigation into Yoon’s controversial declaration of martial law and a series of scandals tied to the former ruling couple.

Earlier this month, prosecutors sought a 15-year prison sentence for Kim, who is currently in detention and standing trial on charges including bribery and illicit mediation. She has consistently denied the allegations. A lower court is expected to issue a ruling on January 28.

According to prosecutors, Kim’s actions severely weakened public institutions through repeated abuses of power. They allege that bribes received from politicians and business figures amounted to 377.25 million won (approximately $263,000).
Kim’s legal team rejected the findings, arguing that investigations must be resolved through evidence presented in court rather than prosecutorial claims. In a statement, her lawyers said they would work to ensure procedural fairness and prevent what they described as political distortion of the facts.

The special prosecution has also indicted Han Hak-ja, leader of the Unification Church, who is accused of facilitating the delivery of luxury gifts including two Chanel handbags and a diamond necklace to Kim in an attempt to gain political influence. Han has denied instructing her organisation to bribe the former first lady.

Prosecutors further allege that Kim accepted other high-end items, including luxury jewellery, a Dior handbag, a wristwatch, and a painting by renowned South Korean minimalist artist Lee Ufan.

Former President Yoon has told investigators he was unaware of the alleged transactions, a claim assistant special prosecutor Kim Hyung-geun said many find implausible. He added that individuals seeking political favours approached Kim directly rather than the president, offering money and valuables in return for assistance.
Yoon, who was removed from office following his failed martial law attempt, is currently on trial for allegedly orchestrating an insurrection, charges that carry the possibility of life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

He has denied all accusations. A court ruling in his case is expected in early 2026.
