Six Bayelsa LG chairmen quit PDP after Douye Diri’s resignation

Six local government chairmen in Bayelsa State have declared their resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligning themselves with Governor Douye Diri’s decision to exit the party.

Governor Diri, on Wednesday, announced his departure from the PDP, citing “very obvious reasons.” He further disclosed that members of his cabinet and the state house of assembly had also withdrawn their membership from the opposition party.

In a subsequent development, the chairmen, under the umbrella of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), formally announced their resignation from the PDP during a press briefing held at the association’s secretariat in Yenagoa.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Lelei Tariye Isaac, chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, said their action was prompted by the growing turmoil within the PDP.

“We are indeed grateful for the opportunity to serve the people for the past one and a half years,” Isaac said.

“We were elected on the platform of the PDP, and today, we are aware that our leader, Governor Douye Diri, has formally resigned his membership of the party. As chairmen, vice chairmen, councillors and appointees in the local government areas, we support the decision of our governor. We stand with him and, consequently, we also resign our membership of the PDP.”
