Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to Samoa 2024 Commonwealth summit
In line with a directive from President Tinubu, the Vice – president Kashim Shettima has been tasked with leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), set to take place in Apia, Samoa.
Tinubu who just came back after his two week leave made this known through Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications.
Scheduled for October 21 to 26, the summit will bring together leaders from 56 member countries.
The theme for this year’s summit is centered on building resilience, unlocking potential, and fostering a digitally connected Commonwealth.
“One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Commonwealth” which is the theme comes at a timely moment where critical issues such as the global economy, environmental sustainability, and security challenges need to be addressed to make the world a better place for member countries.
At the 2024 CHOGM, election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General is set to take place
The new leader will emerge from Africa based on the rotation principle, with candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia in contention for the position.
Nigeria, largest African member of the Commonwealth is expected to be key in making the decision.
More importantly, Shettima will engage in bilateral meetings with global leaders and work to attract foreign investors to Nigeria.
