Seven pregnant women, infants, other migrants arrive from Libya

A new set of 218 Libyan returnees arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Tuesday morning (today) at about 3:44 a.m in a Libyan Airline.

Statistics from the International Organization for Migration put the number of returnees that have returned to Nigeria from Libya since the exercise began at 8,129.

This particular set of returnees comprises 46 female adults including seven pregnant women and five female infants. 161 male adults, as well as two male children and nine male infants, were part of the returnees.

South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Sulaiman Yakubu while receiving the returnees implored them to be champions of change in sensitising the youths against the temptation of seeking greener pastures through illegal migration, describing such as “a dangerous venture.”

Sulaiman assured the returnees that the Federal Government was pursuing socio-economic programmes aimed at giving employable opportunities to the youths.

One of the returnees, Titilayo Kayode-Owojori, from Ile Ife, Osun State, regretted embarking on the ill-fated journey but thanked God for returning home safely.

She said: “Nigeria is far better than where we thought we could get better lives. The Libyans live with the sweat of the blacks.

“If the Arabs see us working and collecting wages, they wait and burst our houses to collect the money. If they don’t see any money, they will kidnap us and ask us to call Nigeria to send us money to free ourselves. If we can’t raise money, we will be sold or imprisoned.”
