Senate President Akpabio Denies Sexual Harassment Allegations Amid Growing Controversy

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has firmly denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him, stating he has “never harassed any woman.” His statement came during a plenary session on Wednesday after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, formally submitted her petition against him on the Senate floor.

Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, dismissed the claims as baseless, revealing that he has received numerous calls from concerned Nigerians regarding the allegations.

“At no time did I ever attempt any sexual harassment on the said distinguished Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan or any other woman for that matter,” Akpabio declared. “I and my siblings were raised very well by my late single mother, who died in 2000, through very difficult times. And I therefore have the highest regard for women.”

He further emphasized his respect for women, referencing his four daughters and past recognitions, including awards for being a gender-friendly governor.

“I also have four beautiful daughters. At no time would I ever harass any woman, and I have never done so,” he reiterated. “Even as a state governor, I won several awards, including the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.”

The Senate President expressed gratitude for the support and solidarity he has received from colleagues and the public, maintaining confidence that he would be vindicated.

“I urge all Nigerians, particularly the media and members of the social media, to await the court’s decision. And please, do not jump to conclusions on matters of mere allegation,” he urged. “The Almighty God will step in to vindicate the just.”

The dispute between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan dates back to a heated confrontation on February 20 over Senate seating arrangements, after which she was referred to the Senate’s disciplinary panel. The situation escalated on February 25 when Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against the Senate President.
