The House of Representatives has commenced a two-week recess to allow Nigerian lawmakers to focus on what is described as oversight activities that are essential for ensuring accountability across government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

The recess began on Monday, November 4, 2024, and is set to end on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. During this period, Honourable Members will work closely with MDAs to review performance, ensuring transparency and effective governance.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, highlighted the critical nature of this period. He emphasized that with the fiscal year coming to a close, it is the duty of the House to rigorously assess government performance.

“As we approach the end of the year, this period of oversight is essential for assessing the performance of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs),” Speaker Abbas said.

“We are here to ensure accountability and efficiency within the public sector, fulfilling our obligation to the Nigerian people.”

The Speaker underscored the need for cooperation between MDAs and lawmakers, urging the agencies to provide full access and necessary information to facilitate a comprehensive evaluation.

“I call on all MDAs to extend their full cooperation,” he appealed. “We expect them to facilitate thorough and meaningful assessments by providing members with all necessary information and access.”

Speaker Abbas also reiterated that the recess would impact only the House’s plenary sessions, meaning other legislative activities would remain active. Committee meetings, constituency outreach, and preparatory work for the upcoming budget sessions will continue, allowing members to maintain close engagement with the legislative process and their constituencies.
