Relief as FG disburses funds for NASU salaries, retirees’ benefits
The FG has disbursed funds to pay overdue staff salaries of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities, NASU and benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
The concerned members have long been complaining about their salaries and benefits not being paid which has made life a lot harder for them, coupled with the economic hardship ravaging the country.
In an effort to send a clear message to the FG, the joint committee of SSANU and NASU embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday, stating “No salary, no resumption“.
It was gathered that university executives, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, did not receive salaries for four months.
With the latest development, it is evident that their cries and pleas didn’t fall on deaf ears, as the FG has announced funds has been released to pay their outstanding salaries and benefits.
The information was officially confirmed in a statement on Saturday and signed by Bawa Mokwa, Director, Press and Public Relations, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
According to him, some of the affected members have already started receiving their receipts of payment
“The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities,” the statement read”.
“According to the OAGF, the Federal Government has also released funds for payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector”.
“The OAGF said payments to the Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities had commenced and many have confirmed receipt”.
