Prince Andrew arrested in U.K. over alleged misconduct in public office
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, widely known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested in the United Kingdom in connection with an investigation into alleged misconduct in public office.
According to the BBC, officers from Thames Valley Police detained a man in his 60s on Thursday, February 19, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Authorities have also carried out searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk.
Police said they would not confirm the identity of the suspect in line with national guidelines. “Please also remember that this case is now active, so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court,” the statement added.
Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said the investigation was launched following a detailed assessment of the allegations. “It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence,” he said. He acknowledged the public interest in the case and noted that further updates would be provided when appropriate.
Mountbatten-Windsor, the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and brother of King Charles III, turned 66 on the day of his arrest.
The development comes amid renewed scrutiny following recent disclosures reportedly linking the former royal to materials associated with Jeffrey Epstein. Authorities are said to be examining allegations of misconduct during his time in public office, as well as claims that a second woman was sent to the United Kingdom for a sexual encounter with him by Epstein.
At present, police have confirmed that the arrest specifically relates to the allegation of misconduct in public office. Investigations are ongoing.
