‘A Source of National Pride’ — Tinubu Praises Tems for Second Grammy Win
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, on winning the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 3, 2025.
In a statement released on Monday, February 4, by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the artist for her exceptional talent, describing her latest Grammy win as a moment of pride for Nigeria.
This marks Tems’ second Grammy victory, following her first award in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her collaboration on Future’s hit song Wait for U, which also featured Canadian rapper Drake.
The President praised Tems and other Nigerian artists nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards—including Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Lojay, Davido, and Burna Boy—for showcasing Nigeria’s creativity and musical excellence.
“You are all inspiration and role models to many young people,” Tinubu said. “The nation remains deeply grateful for your contributions to music, job creation, and tourism promotion.”
Highlighting the global influence of Nigerian music, the President noted that Afrobeats has become a major cultural export, bringing international recognition to the country.
“From Africa to Antarctica, Asia to Australia, Europe to the Americas, the Nigerian music industry, particularly Afrobeats, has become a source of national pride, promoting a sense of identity and self-expression while uniting people across borders,” he said.
