President of South Africa Football Association charged in fraud case
President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Danny Jordaan, has been arrested on fraud and theft charges, according to local reports.
Jordaan was charged on Wednesday for diverting SAFA’s resources for personal gain. According to Police in South Africa, the fraud and theft charges against him sum up to 1.3 million rands ($72,000).
A statement released by the Police indicates that the crimes occurred between 2014-2018.
“The allegations are that between 2014 and 2018, the president of SAFA used the organisation’s resources for his personal benefit,” a police statement read.
The statement added that Jordaan hired a private security company for his personal protection and a public relations company all authorisation from the organization’s board.
The hiring of a public relations firm is linked to a sexual allegation levelled against him in 2017 by South African singer and former lawmaker, Jennifer Ferguson.
SAFA chief financial officer, Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling, were also arrested as well.
Jordaan was SAFA president since 2013 and was re-elected for a third term in 2022.
All three defendants have been granted bail by the court.
