Pope Francis’ Health Improves but Doctors Remain Cautious
Pope Francis is in stable condition and no longer requires mechanical ventilation as he continues his recovery from double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, the Vatican announced on Monday.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14 with severe respiratory complications, “rested well all night,” according to a brief morning statement from the Vatican. A more detailed medical update is expected later in the day.
The Vatican’s recent updates have taken a more optimistic tone since Friday when the pope suffered a respiratory constriction, described as similar to an asthma attack, which required medical intervention. On Sunday evening, officials confirmed that he had been without fever and was no longer using non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
Despite signs of improvement, the Vatican noted that doctors remain cautious due to the complexity of his condition, keeping his prognosis “guarded.” Pope Francis has a history of lung issues, having undergone surgery to remove part of one lung as a young man, making him more vulnerable to infections.
