Police Warns Public Against Fraudsters Exploiting IGP’s Name for Extortion, Intimidation
The Nigeria Police Force has raised the alarm over a rising trend of fraudsters and unscrupulous individuals exploiting the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to engage in illegal activities.
In a public notice issued on Saturday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police described the misuse of the IGP’s name to perpetrate crimes such as extortion and intimidation as both “alarming and unprofessional.”
The statement, titled “Misuse of Name, Office of the Inspector-General of Police,” outlined how fraudsters often claim to have the IGP’s backing or approval to coerce and intimidate unsuspecting individuals. This deceitful tactic frequently deters victims from reporting such incidents, believing they might not receive justice.
“The Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few individuals and officers, which tarnishes the reputation of the Force,” the statement read. “Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions, some officers and fraudsters continue these shameful acts, eroding public trust in law enforcement.”
The Police also emphasized their zero-tolerance stance towards misconduct, reassuring the public of their commitment to maintaining integrity and professionalism.

As part of the advisory, the Force urged Nigerians to exercise caution when approached by individuals or officers claiming ties to senior Police officials for personal gain or undue influence.
The Police advised citizens to promptly report any instances of misconduct to higher authorities, including the Complaint Response Units (CRUs) or the Commissioner of Police in their respective states. The contact details for CRUs nationwide have been widely published to ensure accessibility.
“The Nigeria Police Force encourages Nigerians to collaborate with us by reporting suspicious activities. Together, we can ensure justice and fairness prevail at all times,” ACP Adejobi concluded.
