Police probe death of Bolaji Olatunji, the 77-year old Nigerian driver shot while picking a passenger in the U.S.

A Nigerian Uber driver, Bolaji Olatunji, was tragically shot and killed in Philadelphia in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Bolaji, 77, who hailed from Norristown, Pennsylvania, was in his vehicle when the fatal shooting occurred, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

The incident, which has shocked both the local community and Nigerians in the diaspora, was captured on surveillance footage that has since gone viral. The video shows Bolaji Olatunji parked in his black Chevy Suburban on 18th Street at around 2 a.m., waiting to pick up a passenger.

According to police, the passenger, a 22-year-old man, had just opened the car door to get in when two assailants suddenly appeared and opened fire. Bolaji was shot in the head but managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a light pole on Chestnut Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The passenger was also struck multiple times — in the arm, leg, and abdomen — and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Authorities say the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier altercation involving the passenger and the suspects. The gunmen are believed to have fled the scene in a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee with Massachusetts license plates.

Local residents and friends have expressed deep sorrow over Bolaji Olatunji’s death, describing him as a kind-hearted and hardworking.

A longtime family friend told local outlets that Bolaji was a loving partner and devoted father whose son is a college graduate. “He always wanted to help people,” the friend said, adding that the family is heartbroken and demanding justice.
