Police officer shoots Kwara State Polytechnic student on the leg, family calls for justice

A second year Civil Engineering Higher National Diploma student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Bukola Olugbon is demanding justice from the Nigeria Police following the shooting he suffered at the hands of a police officer identified as Abubakar Ahmed.

Bukola’s family has tasked Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and the  Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, to investigate the shooting of their son and bring the culprit to book.

“The police must investigate and punish the culprit to serve as a deterrent to others,” a relative of the victim, Mr. Ibrahim Olugbon, said.

Bukola, PUNCH gathers, has been receiving treatment at Adedayo Clinic and Maternity on Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Ilorin since he was allegedly shot on his leg by the officer on the premises of a bank.

In his narration, Bukola explained that he went to a branch of First Bank Plc in Surulere, Ilorin with his dad who wanted to withdraw money for his school fees.

He had been in the banking premises waiting for his dad who had joined a queue before a security operative in the bank challenged him, prompting an argument.

His explanation that he was waiting for his dad fell on deaf ears, generating into a scuffle before the security operative called the policeman to intervene.

“The policeman did not show me any identity and was not in uniform. He asked me what happened between the security man and me and I explained to him. As I made to leave, the policeman dragged me back and slapped me. He drew me out from the banking hall and shot at my leg. I don’t know when and how I got to the police station at the B Division Surulere,” Bukola narrated to the publication.

“They asked me at the police station who shot me and I told them that Ahmed shot me. I was bleeding profusely. I don’t know how I got to the hospital.

“I am feeling pains. This can affect my education and my future. I need N6m compensation from the police and I need proper care. I want the policeman who shot me to face the consequence of his action.”

The victim’s father, Atiku expressed his disappointment at the policeman, and said that he must be made to face the law for his irresponsible act, despite that the officer had been footing Bukola’s hospital bills.

Dr Adebayo Omotosho of Adedayo Clinic and Maternity, reportedly issued a report that stated Bukola’s injury was as a result of gunshot.

Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, said there was no record of the case at the police station, but added that the command had commenced investigation into the allegation.
