Police Declares “Arrest By Proxy” Illegal
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has frowned upon the practise of arrest by proxy, labelling it “illegal.”
This pronouncement was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday.
‘Arrest by proxy’ occurs when another (mostly friend or relative) is arrested in place of a suspect.
While fielding questions on the social media, X, regarding the legality of arrest by proxy, Adejobi held that, “arrest by proxy is unprofessional, illegal, and unacceptable. Re-echoe it.”

He went further to state that, “you can’t arrest the mother in place of her son for an offence she knows nothing about. Except if the mother has been alleged of or one sees traces of conspiracy, accessory before the fact, and accessory after the fact.”
He explained that, it borders on the Investigating Police Officers to do their due diligence before carrying out arrests.
“The IPO must be sure of any of these before arresting the mother. But if not, arrest by proxy is an act of wickedness, illegality,” Adejobi said.
